General Requirements

While many dogs bring joy and comfort to their families, not every dog is suited for therapy or service work. Beyond a friendly personality, the following requirements must be met:

Eligibility

  • Dogs must be at least 4 months old
  • Handlers must be 16 years or older

Training & Behavior

  • Dogs must reliably follow basic commands
  • Completion of basic obedience training is required
  • Dogs must enjoy meeting new people and remain calm when approached or handled by strangers
  • Comfort in unfamiliar environments is essential

Equipment & Class Expectations

  • Medium dogs: prong collar required
  • Small dogs: martingale collar with chain
  • 5–6 ft leash (leather preferred; retractable leashes not permitted)
  • Handlers must bring cleaning supplies, paper towels, and waste bags
