Additional Training Opportunities

Once you have successfully completed the Therapy Dog and/or Service Dog Training Program, we also offer the following training classes:

NARCAN

Training includes recognizing the signs of opioid overdose in dogs, proper administration of Narcan, and steps to take in an emergency.

  • Narcan (naloxone) is a life-saving medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of opioid overdose.
  • While it is commonly associated with human use, Narcan can also be crucial for service and therapy dogs who may be exposed to opioids in various environments.

Why is Narcan Important for Service and Therapy Dogs?

  • Accidental Exposure: Service and Therapy dogs often work in hospitals, clinics, schools, and community settings where accidental exposure to opioids can occur. Even a small amount can be dangerous or fatal to dogs.
  • Quick Response: Opioid toxicity in dogs can progress rapidly. Having Narcan on hand allows handlers or staff to respond immediately, increasing the chances of survival.
  • Peace of Mind: Carrying Narcan provides reassurance to handlers, staff, and the communities served by service and therapy dogs, knowing they are prepared for emergencies.
